Concept Paper
First National Conference on the Preservation of APIA Historic Resources
The historic preservation movement in the United States is an important issue as it relates to the Asian and Pacific Islander American (APIA) communities. There are numerous historic ethnic neighborhoods and groups that are struggling to preserve its history, culture, heritage, and structures across the country. The APIA communities and their preservation allies have never before come together to focus on the preservation of APIA historic resources, and to share their experiences and stories, and to support one another in a common struggle not to lose their past.
Members of the National Trust for Historic Preservation APIA Caucus and staff have been discussing this concept and have decided on the following timeline:
Spring 2009: NTHP Western Region and the APIA Caucus and volunteers in the San Francisco Bay area will convene a Planning Conference in the Spring of 2009 in the Bay Area to plan for a National Conference to be held in the Spring of 2010.
The Planning Conference will bring together interested people to help plan the program for 2010, plan the logistics and outreach, and define the goals of the conference. Experts, resource people, and people active in the field within their APIA communities will be invited to attend (on their own). Representatives from NTHP, NPS, APIA Historical Societies and preservation groups have expressed their desire to attend.
Spring 2010: Although a location has not been chosen, Los Angeles has been suggested as a possible locale, possibly piggy-backing on the national American Association of Museums conference scheduled for LA at that time. The location, date, theme, and program will be determined at the Planning conference but it is likely the 2010 Conference will be held either in LA or in SF.
If you would like to participate in the 2009 Planning Conference and/or the 2010 National Conference on the Preservation of APIA Historic Resources, please email or contact Bill Watanabe at: bw@ltsc.org or at (213) 473-1607.
Thank you!
